Moto Media Test Ride the 2026 YZ450F: Here’s What They Said
A smoother, quieter engine with chassis updates deliver better all-around performance and accessibility for more riders / Mar 1, 2026 /
Champions don’t sit idle. So, after Cooper Web captured the 2025 Supercross title, we still brought the 2026 YZ450F with extensive updates and highly refined power delivery and handling performance.
With the 2026 YZ450F’s newly refined engine, chassis and suspension, we invited the biggest moto media out to tracks around Southern California to get their initial impressions. Did they accept? You bet they did, and they put the YZ450F to task from Fox Raceway, to Cahuilla Creek MX, and even the infamous and legendary Glen Helen Raceway, and felt for themselves how the newly improved YZ450F would keep its title as the premier 450 motocross bike.
Yamaha focused on refining the engine character with a revised intake port design, air intake, and exhaust, and delivered more linear power delivery from low- to mid-range torque, while maintaining the YZ450F’s unequaled top-end power. Media described the 2026 YZ450F as more manageable and predictable, with smoother power delivery and improved connection to the rear tire, while still retaining the performance the YZ is known for.
“Yamaha has been answering our requests to make the bike smoother, more stable, quieter, and easier to ride on the track.”
“They've really smoothed that out and just the whole pull is a lot more progressive”
“... they try to make the bike a little bit smoother and more predictable, especially with the power delivery, and it feels like you're very connected to the back wheel.”
“... they want a more controlled engine feeling with smoother power delivery […] and an overall more connected feeling from the throttle to the rear tire.”

With refinements to the aluminum frame for an improved front-end feel, cornering precision and easier line selection, the test riders commented on a more planted feel with increased front-end traction and improved stability in corners and bumps.
“... overall, this bike has a lighter, more playful, more agile feel.”
“... a lot of the improvements were in the corners. Suspension felt a little bit more planted.”
“... it was a lot more planted. It wouldn't jump around as much. So, the bike just felt really planted all around.”
“... the chassis was much improved […] more front end contact feeling and traction feeling.”
- Vital MX
“The frame […] was also redesigned for 2026 to provide a more planted feel.”

An immediately noticeable change to the bike is how much quieter it’s been than in past years. With 109 decibel restrictions being introduced, it was important to make the bike compliant, while also addressing one of the previous version’s biggest points of criticism.
“... the list of changes on this bike include an airbox, resonator, and duct that have been added to reduce sound.”
“Probably the most significant one is they're working on reducing the overall sound output of the bike.”
“To make the bike quieter, a small resonator has been added to the mid-pipe, and the muffler’s internals have been altered …”
Aside from the obvious changes, test riders also looked “under the hood” and were impressed with the component updates, highlighting concrete mechanical changes such as a new hydraulic clutch, and updated gearing.
“... they've gone to the hydraulic clutch which I really like … it never fades and it's less jumpy.”
“A new flywheel was added to help smooth out the power curve. Out back, there’s a larger 51-tooth rear sprocket compared to the previous 49-tooth unit.”
“A Nissin hydraulic clutch has replaced the cable clutch.”

By the end of the year, we saw many of these same media put the newly updated YZ450F against the rest of the 450 competition. It was no small feat, with several motorcycle brands entering the 450 motocross segment in recent years. Despite the tough competition, the YZ450F consistently came out on top, capturing more shootout wins than any other model. You can see why here:

To wrap it up, the test rider’s reviews consistently pointed to key factors in the YZ450F’s concept and performance:
● Smoother, easier-to-ride power across the powerband
● Improved chassis that feels more planted with better front-end traction
● A quieter engine that is 109 decibel compliant
● Impressive engineering updates with the intake/exhaust, clutch, gearing
